Khalid's departure from Permodalan and entry into Guthrie management, states that Khalid was able to purchase a 5 per cent share of Guthrie at RM2.50 per share, a big discount over the then-market price of RM3.96 per share. Khalid, said the newspaper, had an option to purchase an additional 15 per cent of the company for a price to be determined later.
The 'golden handshake', the Asian Wall Street Journal reported, gave Khalid an immediate windfall of RM73 million.
